Press StatementArtHatch and Distinction Gallery are excited to present a highly anticipated new show featuring the extraordinary work of Southern California artist Gabe Leonard, entitled "Black Magic Method". Drawing inspiration from the lifestyles of mobsters, Gabe Leonard will be exhibiting brand new paintings and drawings created specifically for this show. Using figurative, cinematic inspired images, Leonard achieves an expressive and magical symbolism of iconic characters and personas. Gabe Leonard will be present for a meet and greet during the evening of the reception. The opening reception will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2011 from 6-10pm with Live Music, complimentary Stone Brewery Beer and wine for guests 21 years of age or older.
Originally starting out as a street artist on the boardwalk of Venice Beach, Gabe Leonard has gone on to participate in many of the country's top art festivals and his work has been in gallery exhibits in New York, Los Angels, New Orleans, and Atlantic City. Leonard's art can be found in private collections all over the U.S., Europe, New Zealand, Australia and parts of China. Leonard's continues to live in Los Angeles and is often in his studio painting until the sun rises.
The exhibition will be held from February 11 - March 3, 2012.
ArtHatch is a 7000 square foot building which houses the front gallery: exhibitions changing monthly, "The Alley," featuring new and previous works from over 75 artists, the teen room featuring artwork by 10 local teens, 14 artist studios, ranging in size from 150 to 800 square feet, featuring the work of over 30 local artists, and "The Lounge", containing 8 walls featuring local artists. The front gallery features contemporary and cutting edge artwork.
Since 2010, ArtHatch has been providing art supplies, mentorships, and exhibition space to teen artists -most of them underserved and at-risk youths - free of charge. The teen program focuses on the development of talent and skill in the visual arts; and the teens are introduced to a wide variety of media such as oil, acrylic, spray paint, digital arts, and metals. Local and international artists work directly with students to provide lessons that develop visual awareness along with a functional art vocabulary, hold discussions on art throughout history, teach them to analyze and to recognize a good composition, and provide instruction for skill development and practice. The goals are to promote the fine arts by giving young artists the opportunity to discover, create, and display their unique style, elegance, and technique. The mentorship of emerging and established artists is absolutely critical for the success of the teen program. Our teen artists hope to become professional artists, designers, curators, registrars and teachers themselves one day; and the guidance of successful art world adults is invaluable to these teens in terms of instruction and networking.
