Do we control our futures? Are we the playthings or authors of fate? Can we rewrite our stars? Our artists confront all such questions and more this March, in a showcase of paintings, drawings and mixed media pieces. Some have thought about luck as a subject matter, an arbitrary force external to people, places and things. Others have catechized fate via material qualities, following in the footsteps of expressionism. While all of our members are professional artists with countless corporate clients, all works on show have been independently created - purely through the auspices of imagination. Luck is illustrated by different cultures in different ways, from shamrocks to horseshoes to koi. Though not all of our members trade in symbology, we have such a variety of origins that visitors are apt to experience a world tour of perspectives in a single show. December 10 2022Gallery | Feral FriendsDistinction is pleased to announce our upcoming exhibition by uniquely talented artist Valency Genis with her solo show "Feral Friends". Genis is an artist with a head full of never ending creatures, who displays her ability to bring these vivid imaginations to life with her amazing sculptures of fanciful hybrid animals. A whimsical menagerie of imaginary taxidermy creatures, her work continues to catch the eyes and hearts of fans across the globe and of all age groups. In her youth, she was utterly obsessed with television and video games, so it is ironic that a summer spent on Flathead Lake, Montana, in an electronics-free log cabin when she was 10 years old would change her life forever. Searching for diversions to alleviate her interminable boredom, she happened upon an old taxidermy shop. A dusty pair of "unborn beavers" caught her eye in the window display, and it forever imprinted on her naive adolescent mind. The stunning array of animals presented in the rustic store drew her in with their beauty, but she was bereaved by their demise. While studying for her BFA at the University of New Mexico, Valency discovered that she had the power to create creatures and control their aesthetics, while minimizing the tragedy associated with taxidermied animals. She takes an almost Dr. Frankenstein-like glee in crafting her unique animals, drawing on influences such as Tim Burton, Jim Henson, and Dr. Seuss. With close attention to detail, her bizarre creations are adorned with bright colors and bows, striking the perfect balance between humorous and grotesque. Vivanco has become one of the most sought after and collected artists with a global collection base and following. Vivanco, a native to Southern California, earned her BFA from Laguna College of Art and Design. She works with a variety of media to create art with whimsy, nostalgia and a sense of child-like wonder. Vivanco draws from the real and imagined world to populate her works with a host of playful and curious characters. She takes inspiration from vintage photographs, children's literature and the oddness of her dreams. Shehas exhibited in solo and group shows across the U.S. including California Center for the Arts Museum, The Portsmouth Museum of Art, Thinkspace, SURU, Gallery 1988, Subtext, Rotofugi, Flatcolor, 323 East, London Miles, Art Basel and Orange County Center for Contemporary Arts. Kelly Vivanco's art is available for sale and is collected in the U.S. and abroad; and her daily comic, Patches, has a world-wide following. She currently resides in Escondido, California. Vivanco has created 20 brand new whimsical paintings for the exhibition, many which were custom framed. Cruz is a self taught creator expressing elements of science fiction and dream inspired landscapes. Music brings creative journeys that bring out these worlds of madness. Aside from oil painting, he is also a music creator. Writing music ties his oil subjects to a unique experience. Currently, he is creating videos on YouTube (Metal Earth Studio). Hoss Cruz also has a long term career as a tattooer, his tattoo art contains a lot of oil painting techniques rendered in color and black and white. Cruz will display a variety of paintings including portraits, full figure skulls, and fantasy style works with a dark flare.
